About the Coffee
Colombia Excelso Huila EA Decaf is sourced from smallholder farmers across Huila, one of Colombia’s most celebrated coffee regions. Known for its rich volcanic soils, high altitudes, and diverse microclimates, Huila produces coffees with clarity, sweetness, and complexity. This decaf lot is carefully selected to maintain the integrity of origin character while offering a versatile cup suitable for espresso or filter.
Cultivation and Processing
Coffee in Huila thrives between 1,500 and 1,900 masl, where slow cherry maturation enhances sugar development and flavour depth. Farmers grow primarily Caturra, Castillo, and Bourbon varietals, cultivated using traditional methods and hand-harvested to ensure only ripe cherries are processed.
After harvest, the cherries are fully washed and sun-dried on patios or raised beds. The green coffee is then shipped for decaffeination, which removes 99.9% of caffeine.
The Legacy of Coffee in Huila
Coffee cultivation is central to Huila’s culture and economy, with many smallholder families dedicating generations to the craft. Despite challenges such as leaf rust and market fluctuations, the region has maintained a reputation for high-quality, specialty coffees through cooperative structures, certifications, and sustainable practices.
Coffees like Excelso Huila EA Decaf demonstrate that careful sourcing and processing can deliver the signature vibrancy and clarity of Colombian coffee, even without caffeine.
