COLOMBIA - POPAYAN - WASHED

Discover the smooth, balanced flavors of Colombia Popayán

More about this bean...

OVERVIEW:
Discover the smooth, balanced flavors of Colombia Popayán Washed Excelso, a shining example of the rich coffee tradition of Cauca. Grown in the high-altitude plateaus surrounding the historic city of Popayán, this coffee benefits from nutrient-rich volcanic soils and ideal climate conditions. With its round body, bright cranberry-like acidity, and sweet brown sugar and black tea notes, this lot captures the elegance and consistency that Colombian coffee is celebrated for worldwide.

PRODUCER:
This coffee is produced by various smallholder farmers in the Cauca region. Most farms are family-owned and smaller than five hectares, allowing for careful handpicking and farm-level processing. Many of the producers belong to indigenous communities with deep-rooted traditions of coffee cultivation.

ALTITUDE AND LOCATIONS:
The Popayán plateau sits at elevations between 1,400 and 1,800 meters above sea level, nestled near the Puracé volcano. The area's rich volcanic soils, cool temperatures, and ample rainfall provide perfect conditions for cultivating exceptional Arabica coffee.

PROCESSING:
After hand-harvesting at peak ripeness, cherries are pulped, fully washed, and sun-dried on the farms using traditional methods. The dry parchment is then delivered to dry mills where it undergoes further quality selection and preparation for export. The result is a clean, sweet, and vibrant cup.

COFFEE TRADITION:
Colombia's coffee tradition stretches back to the 18th century, with commercial production taking off in the 19th century. Today, Colombia is one of the world’s leading coffee producers, and regions like Cauca are increasingly sought after for their distinctive profiles. The region benefits from two harvest seasons — a main crop and a mitaca (mid-crop) — allowing for a steady supply of fresh coffee throughout the year.
