More about this bean...

COFFEE PROFILE

An elegant coffee that shows finesse on the palette, with aromas and flavours of milk chocolate, sweet malt, raspberries, and nuts. Round body with balanced acidity.

About the Coffee

This naturally processed coffee is produced by smallholders in Oriente. The high altitude and ideal microclimate create the perfect conditions for producing this delightful coffee.

Cultivation and Processing

Smallholders in Oriente cultivate Catuai, Caturra, Pache, and Bourbon on small farms that are under 5 hectares on average. Their farms, located at altitudes of 1,300 to 1,600 meters above sea level, provide the perfect setting for this distinctive coffee. After selectively handpicking ripe cherries, farmers dry the coffee in direct sunlight on concrete patios, frequently raking it to ensure even drying.

The Legacy of Coffee in Guatemala

Coffee is woven into the fabric of Guatemala's culture and economy, flourishing in its lush, mountainous landscapes. Introduced in the 18th century, coffee cultivation grew into a defining industry, shaping communities and livelihoods. Today, Guatemala is celebrated for its strictly hard beans grown at high altitudes, renowned for their complexity and vibrant flavors.

Guatemalan coffee is characterised by its diversity, with nearly 300 unique microclimates offering a broad spectrum of taste profiles. Shade-grown and primarily Arabica, the coffees are expertly cultivated and processed with methods that have been refined over centuries. Natural and honey processing methods are gaining popularity, adding exciting variations to Guatemala’s coffee repertoire.

Challenges and Resilience

Despite facing challenges like Coffee Leaf Rust and fluctuating market prices, Guatemalan farmers exhibit remarkable resilience. Many are embracing innovations in farming practices and diversifying crops to sustain their livelihoods. Cooperative models have become pivotal, empowering smallholder farmers with resources and access to specialty markets.

The industry continues to evolve, driven by passionate farmers dedicated to producing exceptional coffee. Each cup of Guatemalan coffee carries the story of these farmers’ perseverance and the region’s unparalleled natural beauty.
