The Story
Guatemala is one of Central America's great coffee origins, shaped by dramatic mountains, rich volcanic soils and a remarkable diversity of microclimates. From the highlands of Huehuetenango to the volcanic slopes surrounding Antigua and Atitlán, the country's geography creates an enormous range of coffee expressions.
Among Guatemala's most celebrated regions is Huehuetenango, one of the country's highest and most remote coffee-growing areas. The region's elevation, cool nights and relatively dry climate allow coffee cherries to mature slowly, helping develop the combination of bright acidity, sweetness and fruit character for which Huehuetenango is known.
Within the hills of El Pajal, San Antonio Huista, lies Finca El Durazno, the home of producer Octavio López Compeseco. Unlike large commercial estates, this is a small family farm dedicated exclusively to coffee, with Caturra, Catuai and Pache making up the majority of the planting.
Finca El Durazno: Small Farm, Careful Processing
Finca El Durazno covers approximately 6.25 manzanas, with Octavio focusing his efforts on producing quality coffee rather than simply maximising volume. At around 1,650 metres above sea level, the farm benefits from the high-elevation conditions that give Huehuetenango coffees their distinctive structure and brightness.
The attention to detail continues after harvest. Cherries are de-pulped on the same day they are picked, helping preserve their freshness and quality. The coffee then undergoes approximately 24 hours of fermentation before being washed multiple times to remove the remaining mucilage.
Following washing, the parchment is spread across concrete patios and sun-dried for approximately four to six days. This relatively straightforward processing approach allows the natural character of the coffee to remain at the forefront of the cup rather than being dominated by processing flavours.
The Cup
This is a beautifully approachable example of washed Huehuetenango.
The cup begins with bright citrus acidity, followed by sweet red cherry and winey fruit characteristics. As the coffee cools, delicate almond and nutty flavours emerge, adding depth without overpowering the fruit.
There is a gentle sweetness running throughout the cup, giving it a clean and balanced character. The body is relatively light and silky, while the finish is soft, sweet and pleasantly nutty.
It is a coffee that rewards attention as it cools—the initial fruit brightness gradually gives way to a more rounded combination of cherry, citrus, almond and gentle sweetness.
Why It Matters
One of the great strengths of Guatemalan coffee is its ability to combine fruit-driven acidity with sweetness and structure without relying on highly experimental processing.
Finca El Durazno is a good example of this philosophy. Octavio López Compeseco's small farm, high-altitude environment and careful washed processing come together to produce a coffee that is expressive without being excessive.
The coffee also highlights why Huehuetenango remains such an important specialty origin. Its combination of altitude, climate and rugged terrain creates the conditions for coffees with remarkable clarity and complexity, while small producers like Octavio bring the individual care and attention that turns those environmental advantages into something tangible in the cup.
This Guatemala Finca El Durazno is a beautifully balanced washed coffee: bright citrus and cherry, gentle winey fruit, sweet almond and a clean, mellow finish. A classic Guatemalan profile with enough fruit character to keep things interesting and enough sweetness and balance to make it exceptionally versatile.
