Honduras – Hacienda Montecristo HG EP – Washed Arabica
A Legacy of Coffee, Grown with Intention in the Mayan Mountains
In the lush, green highlands of Veracruz, Copán, where the valleys of the Mayan Mountains stretch toward the Guatemalan border, lies Hacienda Montecristo—a family farm with over a century of deep-rooted dedication to coffee. Since 1916, this land has been lovingly stewarded by the Medina family, now in its fifth generation of coffee growers. Their story is one of heritage, resilience, and vision for a sustainable future.
A Farm Treated Like a Treasure
Just 15 kilometers from Santa Rosa de Copán, Hacienda Montecristo spans 279.52 hectares of fertile terrain in a mild, subtropical climate that’s ideal for cultivating coffee. Here, coffee is more than a crop—it’s a legacy. Each bean is treated as a jewel: cultivated using environmentally friendly practices, hand-harvested with care, and monitored through meticulous drying and milling processes.
The farm has invested heavily in solar drying infrastructure, increasing their capacity without compromising on quality. With an additional 10.46 hectares added to production in 2021, the family continues to expand their reach while upholding the highest standards of sustainability and quality control. Their dream? To grow every year—slowly, intentionally, and always with quality at heart.
The Spirit of a Country Reborn
Honduras has overcome immense challenges to become one of the top Arabica producers in the world—often trading spots with Ethiopia for third place globally. From Hurricane Mitch in 1998 to the Coffee Leaf Rust outbreak a decade later, Honduran farmers have rebuilt their farms and reputations with courage and innovation. They’ve transformed adversity into opportunity—investing in education, cooperative systems, and post-harvest excellence.
This progress is no better exemplified than at farms like Hacienda Montecristo, where tradition and forward-thinking coexist—nurturing coffees that are as rich in flavor as they are in history.
