A glimpse into the future of Chinese specialty coffee

More about this bean...

The Story

Yunnan province has always been rich—rich in soil, biodiversity, and culture. It’s long been a world-renowned producer of tea, but high in the misty hills of regions like Simao, Baoshan and Menglian, a quiet revolution has been brewing—coffee.

Coffee first arrived in Yunnan in the late 1800s, planted by missionaries in the shadow of jade-green mountains. By the 1950s, around 4,000 hectares were cultivated with Arabica. But the real shift came in the 1990s, when the region caught the attention of global coffee companies—and the Chinese government itself.

Today, with over 120,000 hectares planted, Yunnan is the heart of Chinese coffee. The Meng Liang area, where this coffee hails from, lies within this vibrant and evolving coffee belt. Farms here benefit from high altitudes and cool, stable climates—perfect for slow ripening and dense bean development.

A New Chapter for Chinese Coffee

Like many in the region, the Meng Liang growers work primarily with Catimor, alongside Caturra, Typica, and even SL34—a nod to the evolving genetic diversity of Yunnan’s coffee sector. Hand-picked by smallholders, the cherries are mechanically pulped, fermented, and washed, then dried in multi-level static dryers for consistent quality.

China’s specialty coffee sector is young, but growing fast. Domestic demand is soaring, and the government is actively supporting coffee as a strategic crop. Most high-scoring lots rarely leave the country—making this export selection a rare opportunity to taste what Yunnan has to offer.

Why It Matters

This is more than just a great cup. It’s a glimpse into the future of Chinese specialty coffee—a future shaped by innovation, resilience, and attention to quality. The China Meng Liang HG Gr1 is a modern cup with deep roots—a taste of China's emerging coffee identity.
