Introducing our Papua New Guinea Asaro B Grade Washed, a vibrant and approachable coffee grown in the fertile valleys of the Asaro region in the Eastern Highlands. Produced by dedicated smallholder farmers cultivating coffee in traditional “coffee gardens,” this lot reflects both the rugged beauty of its origin and the resilience of the communities behind it.
The Asaro Valley is renowned for its rich volcanic soils, high elevations, and cool mountain climate—ideal conditions for producing coffees with clarity and balance. Here, coffee is not grown on large estates but in small, family-owned plots, often intercropped with food crops. This integrated farming approach not only supports sustainability but also contributes to the unique flavour complexity found in PNG coffees.
Cherries are selectively handpicked at peak ripeness and delivered to local wet mills for processing. After pulping, the coffee undergoes a controlled fermentation period of around 24 to 36 hours, helping to break down mucilage and enhance cup clarity. The beans are then thoroughly washed using fresh mountain water before being laid out on raised beds or tarpaulins to dry under the sun. Over the course of 7 to 10 days, careful turning ensures even drying and consistency.
The production of this coffee supports entire village networks, with families and local workers contributing throughout the harvest and processing stages. Income generated from coffee plays a vital role in supporting education, healthcare, and infrastructure within these remote highland communities.
Papua New Guinea coffees are celebrated for their lively acidity, layered sweetness, and distinctive character. The Asaro B Grade Washed is no exception—offering a dependable and versatile profile that works beautifully as both a single origin and a blending component.
