COFFEE PROFILE

A vibrant and complex cup from the highlands of Papua New Guinea, with bright floral aromas and notes of brown sugar and stone fruit. Flavours of red apple, plum, and chocolate are complemented by a medium body, lively acidity, and a clean, lingering finish. This single-origin lot highlights the distinct clarity and regional character PNG coffees are celebrated for.

About the Coffee

PNG Tungei Selection A is sourced from smallholder farmers in the Tungei region of the Eastern Highlands, a high-altitude area known for producing specialty-grade Arabica. Farms here are typically small, family-run operations that prioritise careful harvesting and post-harvest management. This lot represents the best cherries from the region, selected for consistency and cup quality.

Cultivation and Processing

Coffee in Tungei grows at elevations between 1,500 and 1,850 masl, where fertile volcanic soils and cool mountain climates allow cherries to mature slowly, developing complex sugars and flavours. Farmers cultivate primarily Typica and Arusha varietals, hand-picking ripe cherries and processing them using fully washed methods. Beans are fermented to remove mucilage, thoroughly washed, and dried on raised beds, which enhances clarity, sweetness, and balance in the cup.

The Legacy of Coffee in Papua New Guinea

Coffee has been a cornerstone of rural livelihoods in PNG since the 1930s, supporting smallholder communities and local economies. The country’s rugged terrain and high-altitude regions produce coffees with unique regional profiles, prized for their clarity, bright acidity, and expressive flavours. Despite logistical challenges and variable infrastructure, PNG farmers continue to deliver high-quality specialty lots that reflect the heritage and dedication of their communities.
