A Taste of High-Altitude Excellence

More about this bean...

Coffee Profile

Nestled in the majestic Mafinga Hills, straddling the border between Zambia and Malawi, lies the source of this exceptional coffee. The Mafinga Hills plateau, renowned for its rugged quartzite and sandstone terrain, rises to Zambia’s highest peak at 2,339 meters. This challenging yet fertile landscape provides the perfect environment for cultivating high-quality arabica coffee.

A Journey Through History and Geography

The story of Zambian coffee began modestly in the mid-20th century when missionaries introduced coffee cultivation. By the 1980s, supported by initiatives from the World Bank and the UN, coffee farming had blossomed into a thriving industry, particularly in the country’s mountainous Northern Province. Today, Zambia’s coffee farms are a blend of smallholders and large estates, producing unique coffees that reflect the country’s diverse landscapes and innovative farming techniques.

The Mafinga Hills, located in the Northern Province, are not just a geographical marvel; they are the heart of Zambia’s coffee culture. With altitudes ranging from 1,300 to 1,550 meters above sea level, these hills offer the ideal conditions for growing specialty-grade coffee. Here, varieties like Catimor 129, Java, Miracle, and Marsellesa thrive under the careful stewardship of estates like Ngoli, Isanya, and Kateshi.

Cultivation and Processing

The Zambia Mafinga Hills AB Washed coffee is meticulously cultivated and processed to ensure exceptional quality. Fully washed using clean mountain waters, the beans undergo careful fermentation and drying, resulting in a flavor profile that is both vibrant and complex. The high-altitude environment contributes to the coffee’s bright acidity and nuanced characteristics, while the skilled processing enhances its sweetness and depth.

Roasters Tips

This is classic washed coffee. Roasted light, the citric acidity will shine though and make for a bright cup of filter cup. Roasted through to a medium dark profile, the caramels and marmalade like qualities will cut through milk nicely.
